Pomeranians had many other names in the past. Their cousins, the Samoyed, Spitz and Norwegian Elkhound, all closely resemble the Pomeranian as he appeared a scant 70 years ago.
Pomeranians derive their name from Pomerania, an old German province, now an area between eastern Germany and western Poland. The breed was developed from a Spitz breeding line. The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz line. Originally, Pomeranians were called Northern Group Type Dogs, or Spitz Type Dogs. Pictures of Pomeranians were found on the vases and other pieces, dating back to as early as 400 BC.
Pomeranians - Appearance
Pomeranians are toy dogs described as compact, short-backed and active. These dogs have a dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. All colors are allowed. The high set tail is heavily plumed. The dog's head is in balance with the body. The muzzle is rather short, straight and fine. The top of the skull is rounded, with small ears that are set high. The almond-shaped eyes are dark, and medium in size. The teeth meet in a scissors bite.
The Pomeranian's body is compact and well ribbed. The neck is short. The top line is level. The forelegs are straight and parallel to each other. The dog's gait is smooth, vigorous and free.
Pomeranians are intelligent, friendly dogs, capable of making great companions. They are eager to please and do very well in obedience classes. Pomeranians may try to dominate other dogs. If not properly socialized and trained at an early age, Pomeranians may be suspicious of strangers.
