Responsible breeders of Pomeranians carefully select the future owners of their puppies and strive to maintain constant contact with them. They breed for the improvement of the breed. The best breeders are second or third generation breeders who have worked, shown and competed their dogs. They raise their puppies in the house instead of kennels. They are knowledgeable on the Pomeranian breed and can answer all kinds of questions that buyers may ask.
With responsible breeders, you have to prove that you are qualified to own one of their Pomeranians. If the breeder does not ask you about your household conditions, the experience that you have had with dogs, your family, the amount of time you can devote to a dog, and any other related questions, then you should be suspicious.
An ethical breeder will show you the parents of the litter and will tell you about the dogs' strong and weak points. He can even talk you out of the cute puppy to which you are taken, if he sees that the pup's temperament is incompatible with your handling skills and your lifestyle. A good breeder will demand that you sign a contract requiring that you return the puppy if you can no longer keep it. Responsible breeders of Pomeranians will explain total breed care and genetic defects in the breed.
